“Bump” Proofing Your Locks

A popular lock picking method, known as lock “bumping”, has been used in many homes across America. Burglars use a “bump key”, or key blank, to bump the lock so they can gain entrance into your home. While this method doesn’t work for every door, it is a frequently used home invasion method.

Bumping happens when the thief puts the key blank in half way through the door’s lock. They use a hammer or rock to tap the lock, and bump it enough to turn the key. The tap on the key moves the lock pins inside the lock and the key is able to turn the lock the rest of the way.

Doors that use outdated cylinder locks are susceptible to this form of attack. Old locking systems aren’t very reliable, and don’t do a good job with home safety. Yet many people still continue to use old locks.

The best remedy for your home security lock problems is to get in contact with a certified locksmith. Locksmiths are the best people to ask questions about locking systems, and can tell you what models they have available for your home. They also can install the lock in your doors to be sure they are properly installed. Contact Mykey Locksmith” for more help

Locksmiths will have a lot of different locks for you to choose from. Newer model locks are made to withstand lock bumping. Locksmiths have electronic entry systems available as well, which can’t be picked with a key.

Lock bumping has caused a problem with home security, but it is not the only way people are breaking in to home. Sometimes we choose to share keys with employees or neighbors in case of emergencies. Though good in theory, there is no easy way to track how many potential key copies these trusted friends could make.

To avoid this threatening your home security use a restricted key system. Restricted key systems don’t allow keys to be copied. The only way a key can be duplicated is through your locksmith.

Installing new locks can drastically improve your home security. If your existing lock system is old, change out the lock now. Call your nearest locksmith to see what options are available to you.
